No Shoes with Wheels at School, Please!—Shoes with wheels create a potential safety problem in classrooms and hallways. As a result, it is requested that students not move about on wheels. If the wheels cannot be removed or stored inside of the shoe, Bishop requests that another kind of shoe be worn at school.
90 Day “Grace Period” for Completion of Immunizations and Health Assessments is November 12, 2007—Be advised that the 90 day “grace period” for having immunizations and health physicals completed is November 12, 2007. Students who started school on August 15 and do not have these tasks completed and on file will be excluded from attending classes on November 13, 2007.
Constitution Day was Celebrated on September 17—A variety of learning activities occurred. One of the highlights of the day was a speech from Kansas Secretary of State, Ron Thornburgh.
Give Your Child a Boost—Kansas law requires children ages 4, 5, 6, and 7 be secured in a booster seat when riding in a car, van, or truck. For specific information, see the flyer located on the Parent Information shelf located in Bishop’s front entry.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters Sponsors Bishop’s “Everybody Wins” Lunchtime Reading Program—The “Everybody Wins” lunch time reading program continues at Bishop. A limited number of students are currently participating, but referrals are being accepted. If you would like to see your child participate, please discuss the possibility with his/her Bishop teacher. Bishop highly values and thanks the volunteer adult readers who make the program such a success.
E-Mail Filter—E-mail may not be the most dependable method of communication between home and school. Recently, the district’s e-mail filter seems to be very tight…letting in limited e-mail in from outside Topeka Public Schools. Therefore, if you need to communicate with Bishop, call 438-4390 or send a special written note with your student.
Parent Involvement Equals Bishop Success—Research proves that successful schools have involved parents. Bishop desires to be successful with teaching so that students are successful learning. We need your help. Working with students at home is one of the keys to that success. Bishop’s goals focus on math and reading achievement. Bishop Title I hosted a Parent Math Night. On Thursday, October 11, Bishop Title I programs will host a Parent Reading Night. The meeting will start at 6:00 and end no later than 7:30 p.m. Parents will learn specific strategies and techniques for promoting mastery of reading skills with their student (s). All Bishop parents are encouraged to attend.
Student Accident Insurance—Information and application forms for this voluntary program is available at Bishop. This health insurance option is provided to parents as a public service.
Be More Involved at Bishop—1) visit the classroom and school often, 2) volunteer regularly, 3) attend PTO meetings monthly, 4) participate in Parent Teacher conferences, 5) come to Parent Reading Night, 6) eat lunch at school periodically, 7) ask my child’s teacher how I can better support my student at school, 8) read and respond daily in your child’s student planner, 9) ask your child to tell you one thing they learned in math and one thing he/she learned in reading each day. 10) reduce/keep to a minimum student tardies and/or leaving early, 11) promote daily attendance, 12) participate in Bishop Advisory Site Council meetings, 13) etc.
NCA Visit is Set for March 10, 2008—Bishop participates in a five year school improvement cycle. 2007-2008 is the ending year of the current cycle. An accreditation visit will be held on March 10. You and/or your child may be questioned/interviewed by the visiting team to help determine Bishop’s status/progress related to improvement.
