Maude M. Bishop Elementary School was opened in 1965 in a rapidly growing area of southwest Topeka. It was named after Maude Mary Bishop who taught in several elementary schools before joining the staff at Topeka High School. She retired in 1941 after forty-three years in the classroom.
The original building housed ten classrooms, a kindergarten room, a library, a multi-purpose room, and an administrative area. The building was an innovative design with few exterior windows. Spacious classrooms are arranged in pairs which are divided by a movable wall. Classrooms open into courtyard corridors which include indoor planters as well as skylights that enhance the open environment. The building was unique in that it was the only elementary school with an all-electric climate control system. The re-enforced multi-purpose room served as an above ground storm shelter.
Within a short time the burgeoning population necessitated the use of several portable classrooms.
An addition to the building was opened during the 1969-1970 school year. It was comprised of an open-space classroom built to house eight classes, a music room and a teachers' workroom. This area was designated for intermediate classrooms and designed for team and cooperative teaching.
Bishop now serves levels Kindergarten through Five with a current enrollment of approximately 325.
Since 1970, Bishop Elementary School's logo has been the "Bulldog" and the official school colors have been green and white.
